Win for Katherine Boo

Congratulations to Katherine Boo who scooped the non-fiction National Book Award for her powerful book Behind the Beautiful Forevers about life in a Mumbai slum. It’s been a year of awards and accolades for Boo who appeared at the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival earlier in the year.

Louise Erdrich, who has written a number of highly acclaimed books, won the fiction award for The Round House, the story of an Ojibwe boy’s quest to avenge the rape of his mother. Erdrich, who is part-Ojibwe, spoke in her tribal tongue in her acceptance speech.  The Round House is the second in what is planned as a trilogy.

More on the awards later.
