Carrie Tiffany has won the inaugural Stella Prize for women writers in Australia, and $50,000, with her book Mateship with Birds.
The other shortlisted authors were Cate Kennedy, Michelle de Kretser, Lisa Jacobson, Margo Lanagan and Courtney Collins.
The Stella Prize is named after Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin and was set up in direct response to the Miles Franklin award, which statistically heavily favours male writers.
Mateship with Birds is set in 1950s Victoria (Australia) and follows the courtship of a lonely farmer and his neighbour.
