Atticus Lish has been won the 2015 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for Preparation for the Next Life, a love story between Zou Lei, a Chinese muslim immigrant and Brad Skinner, a traumatised Iraq War Veteran. Lish received an advance of just $US2000 when the book was published last year by small independent publisher Tyrant Books. The PEN/Faulkner award carries a prize of $US15,000. Marc Fitten, one of the three judges said that: “The scale, ambition, and endurance of Atticus Lish’s novel — coupled with his indelible characters — left me slack-jawed.
